Dams Implementation Unit Director, Eng. Khadier Gasm Al Saeed, said, while addressing a media forum at Sudan News Agency, that all the civil and hydro-mechanical works in Upper and Setait Project are finalized. He noted that the first and second power turbines will start production on the second of February and the rest will join the national grid gradually up to August.
“The project will generate 320 megawatts of power and will provide irrigation water to almost 1 million feddans,” said Eng. Khadier adding that over 30,000 families affected by the construction of the complex were settled in modern cities equipped with all basic services and income generation projects.
He went to say that the project will end water storing problem in Gashem Al Garaba Dam, pointing that the idea of Upper Atabra and Setait was introduced in 1970s but implementation was delayed to funding issues.
On his part, East Sudan Development Fund head of programmes, Eng. Nafiah Ibrahim Nafiah, said Upper Atbara and Setait Project is a base for peace and development in East Sudan.
