Rapporteur of the Higher Technical Committee at the Dam Implementation Unit, Eng. Ahmed Abdullah Abdullah Dafallah, who supervises and follows up all stages of the construction of the dams, said that the earthquake that occurred in the northern state at the weekend did not affect the Merwe dam at all. He pointing out that the dam is designed to withstand earthquakes measuring 8 degrees Richter. He added that the monitoring of the dam had detected an earthquake of 0.0024 g on Sunday morning, according to the rapid monitoring devices measuring 4.51 on the Richter scale and the dam is designed to withstand 0.50 acceleration force, which means that the accelerating force of the earthquake that occurred was only 0.3%.
He said that before the design of the dam, the seismic map of the area was reviewed, which indicated that the area has very weak tremors.
He pointed out that dams do not cause earthquakes, but rather their lakes help stabilize the earth's crust, adding earthquakes and earthquakes do not stop anywhere in the world as there are natural result of the movement of the earth's crust, which is one of the signs of God.
On March 16, 2017, the Geological Research Organization (GRC) detected an earthquake measuring 4.8 degrees in North Kordofan. Khartoum and the villages of North Gezira State were hit in July 2010 by about 3 degrees on the Richter scale and continued for two seconds.
