Background

Sudan is located in the north eastern part of the African continent. The River Nile is the main geographical phenomena in Sudan. River Nile Basin represents 67.4 % of Sudan’s space. Sudan is considered a cultural and commercial bridge between north and South Africa and with Arab region.

Geographical location: North Africa on the Red Sea.

Longitude: 21.49 East and 34.8 East

Latitude: 23.8 North and 45.8 North

Climate: Dry and semi dry climate in the north and semi rainy in the center.

Natural resources:

Minerals: Oil, iron, gold, chrome, zinc and mica

Animal wealth: camel, goats, sheep, cows and wild life

Land suitable for cultivation: 200 million feddans

Used lands: 20 %

Crops: Sorghum, melts, wheat and ground nuts

Other cash crops: sugar cane, dates, fruits, sun flower and maize.

Irrigated lands: 11 million feddans

Rain fed lands: 29 million feddans

Forests: 11.6 %

Water resources: 309 billion cubic meters

River Nile water: 93 billion cubic meters

Rains average: 400 billion cubic meters.

Underground renewable water resources: 204 billion cubic meters

Population: 34 million

Main towns: Khartoum, Nyala , Port Sudan , Madani and Obeid
